Person handing over taxes to another person

Taxes

#adhd #adhdawareness #adhdbrain #procrastination #productivity Feb 15, 2025

I get to do my own taxes this year.
Well not really ALL of my taxes.
But a good deal more than I’ve had to do in the past.

My bookkeeper is changing her business. My accountant’s phone line is disconnected. She was terribly ill and I’m worried for her. AND my computer bit the dust, so I lost my very old version of Quickbooks.
But I can't change any of that.
I’m starting over from scratch.
It’s February and tax time is looming.

The LAST thing I want to be doing on a Saturday morning is anything related to accounting or MATH for that matter.
Did I happen to mention that MATH things are not my superpower?

But here we are.
We got here because I kept HOPING that my old bookkeeping team would get their act together. But they left me (and so many others) high and dry.

Hope isn’t a strategy.
I was putting my faith in an elusive dream.
One where someone else would just fix this problem for me.
At the end of the day, there will be no white knight to swoop in and rescue me from bookkeeping h*ll.

And today (Saturday) procrastivity has loomed large once again.

Procrastivity is a thing. Have you heard of it?

It means that you’re procrastinating by doing other things.

That’s ME this morning so far –

  • I’ve just got to send this email.
  • I’ll finish my social media then start the taxes.
  • I really want a cup of tea and then I'll start.
  • Oh while I’m in the kitchen, I’ll just put away these dishes.
  • I swear I’ll start right after I write my newsletter.

It’s 10am and I still haven’t started today’s one task, ONE, on my taxes.
Sound familiar?

Update

At 11:30am Saturday in sheer frustration and acknowledgement that I had ZERO incentive plan, I called my accountability buddy.
I promised that I would cross that ONE tax thing off my list before anything else.

And guess what happened?
I got on a roll.
I made the calls, I scanned the documents, I uploaded them to the my new bookkeeping service.
I did nearly ALL of the THINGS!

I’ve got only THREE documents left to track down with the bank on Monday.
Which means I’m about 95% done with this task.
And it feels SO GOOD.

I no longer have the weight of the world on my shoulders.
All of those documents are now with my NEW bookkeeping service.
From here, this tax burden is their problem.

I can breathe and enjoy the rest of this weekend guilt free.
Who doesn’t love that?
Do you have that one thing, that one massive albatross thing, hanging over your head?

Phone a friend, say the thing, pinky swear promise you’ll do it in the next hour, then take that first step.

And if you don’t have anyone to phone, I’m a productivity coach for neurozesty people like me.
