And no, it’s not because you’re lazy or disorganized.
You sit down to work and open your desktop… and the overwhelm begins.
Heck you might even have anticipatory overwhelm!
You look at your screen and see a mumble jumble mess of files and folders - 47 screenshots 13 untitled folders An email inbox that’s more like a digital avalanche.
Does it ever end?
You want to get things done, but the clutter slows you down, stresses you out, and makes you want to throw your hands up in surrender.
Sound familiar?
If you’ve got ADHD (or a zesty, creative brain that’s wired a little differently), digital clutter isn’t just annoying—it’s a major executive function hurdle.
Here’s why:
๐ก ADHD brains don’t naturally file things away.
We’re not wired to think in perfect folder trees. Our brains thrive on connections, not categories. That’s why you’ll save something randomly to your desktop and think, “I’ll remember where that is.” (Spoiler alert: You won’t. Ask me how I know!)
๐ง Working memory is overloaded.
You might forget what you were organizing halfway through doing it. Or you open a folder and think, “Wait, why did I come here again?” Your brain’s RAM is already full—and your digital world keeps asking for more. Stop the world we want to get off!
โณ Time blindness strikes again.
You intend to spend 5 minutes finding a file… and 40 minutes later you’re down the rabbit hole in a copmletely different file. ADHD makes it tough to estimate and track time in the digital space—especially when it all looks the same.
๐ And then comes the shame spiral.
“I should be able to keep this organized.” “If I were more focused, it wouldn’t look like this.” “Other people can keep their stuff in order—why can’t I?”
Let’s stop right there.
๐ You are not lazy, stupid, crazy. ๐ You are not broken. ๐ You are not bad at adulting.
You just haven’t been taught how to organize your digital life in a way that works for your brain.
The Good News? There Is a Way Forward.
ADHD-friendly digital organization isn’t about color-coded perfection. Though you do know I love me some color-coding!
